Face it, a DACA renewal had zero chances of passing the House to begin with. The GOP House admitted it themselves. So why is anyone pretending there was ever a chance? Democrats need to stop playing on losing ground and return to the original premise that started it all as their narrative: “President Trump unnecessarily ended the DACA with the excuse that it needed to be a law, fully knowing that it had no chance of ever passing the Freedom Caucus in the House. Therefore, President Trump completely owns this all by himself.” Democrats screwed up by putting themselves in the spotlight as the ‘illegal immigrant savior party.’ and taking the spotlight off the original premise. There are too many Americans who will never ever fully comprehend a nuanced debate why exceptions should be made for Dreamers. Yes, 87% of Americans support Dreamers, but that support comes with a long long list of requirements and stipulations. Violate any one on the list and you lose large swathes of that support. This is losing territory because it’s where the GOP has the power to obscure facts through propaganda and put you in a position where “if you’re explaining, you’re losing.” This is not the hill that the Democratic Party should die on. The Democratic Party needs to rally a majority in Congress, but not by putting the DACA in front and center. It’s what Trump and the GOP wants, because they know that is how Democrats lose the election.
